Anybody ever tell you, you sound like Fabolous?

Growing up I was a huge Mason Betha aka Ma$e fan…

He was easily my favorite rapper…dude was nice as fuck…Jay-Z, Biggie, Tupac, Snoop, Nas, Method Man, Redman, you name em, were all dope but nobody was better than Mase to me…me & my friends would argue about who the best was…it was an easy choice for me…gimme Mase…lol…he didn’t even drop an album yet and he was performing on award shows with the biggest superstars in music!

Not sure if you’re familiar with Mase’s story…out the blue he shocked everyone (especially me!) & announced that he was becoming a pastor…he was leaving hip hop…I was hurt & maaaaad disappointed…fuck Mase! he’s soft & weak I said to myself…

Mixtapes hosted by DJ’s used to be the shit…DJ Clue had the hottest ones in the streets! I grabbed a copy of his latest release…it banged as usual…one track in particular made me pause for a second…first thought was yo is Mase back??? Homie sounded real similar but I knew it wasn’t him…so who was it then? I grabbed the cd case & saw the name ‘Fabolous Sport’…I’m like wow a Mase wannabe smh…little did I know for the rest of my music career I would be compared to that ‘wannabe’

The first few songs I ever recorded the comparison with Mase was made right away…”Yo you got like a Puffy, Mase kinda vibe going…I like it” someone told me…It was an honor to be compared to Mase but when he ‘retired’ Fabolous came on the scene and his career took off…he dropped a record with the legendary Nate Dogg and everybody was singing along…the funny thing is I never listened to his music…I never bought or even had a Fab album…he was on fire & everybody was bumping his tunes except me…I refused to listen to this dude trying to sound like Mase…

Regardless I kept writing and recording songs and the people I let hear my music really liked it…and then it happened…”this is dope! Anybody ever tell you, you sound like Fabolous?” Uh, can you say nails on the chalkboard??? Lol…I started hearing that constantly…I couldn’t escape! Everyone and their grandmother started comparing me to Fab…those comparisons made me not listen to his music even more! As years went by and Fab turned into a rap superstar I started seeing the comparison in a different light…”Every artist gets compared to someone”, one of my homie’s told me…”You’re getting compared to a very successful artist” hmmm…regardless of what I thought about Fab that was a true statement…enlightening moment…It was a huge compliment…

Download some free songs and let me know what you think about that comparison.

So fast forward to today…I pulled into the carwash and stopped at one of the vacuums…I needed to clean my car out, all the clutter was getting tome…it was one of those seemingly pretty average days for me of trying to tweak & improve my life…today’s tweak was cleaning out the car & to quit smoking weed as much as I did…before I got to the carwash I had just tossed half a joint out the window…”I have to release my new album, spend some time online marketing it, classes, clinicals…” on & on…definitely not the life of your average rapper but shit I’m not average…

Weed was slowing me down & I need every edge I could get right now…I felt like tossing the joint out the window showed I was serious about change…it was a good start but still not enough…I looked at my grinder which still had some more weed left over in it…damn I’m just throwing away some good shit I told myself…but I knew intentions is one thing, real actions indicate another…

I grabbed my fresh pack of fantos & raw papers as well as my grinder…stared at it for a few seconds and got out my car to throw it in the trash…just as I was about to throw it away a young dude pulled up to vacuum his car as well…I thought to myself maybe I should give it to him instead of wasting it…”What’s up bro you burn?”…he responded “yeah”…I then asked him “you want this? I just quit”…his eyes lit up and he said “Oh no doubt bro good looking out” came over shook my hand and grabbed all of my rolling utensils…As he was turning to attend to his car I told him he had to just do one thing for me…listen to my new album…”Oh ok that’s what’s up, I’ll pop this in right now”…I didn’t hear the music playing but said to myself whatever he’ll check it out when he’s ready…

It appeared young dude was finished and he came over to me to thank me again and bid his farewell…he asked me my name and then said “Yo I’m playing your joint right now I already like it a lot…the beats sound dope and your lyrics are tough!”…I thanked him for the high praise…then he said “Yo, anyone ever told you, you sound like Fabolous?”…I smiled proudly “yes man, all the time”…
